Kathrin Pechlof ist Harfenistin und Komponistin, die an der Schnittstelle von zeitgenössischer improvisierter und komponierter Musik, zeitgenössischem Jazz und anderen Formen kreativer Musik arbeitet.
Sie studierte klassische Harfe bei Gudrun Haag in München und Komposition und Improvisation bei Joachim Ullrich und Frank Gratkowski in Köln, ihre künstlerische Praxis speist sich aus einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher musikalischer Ressourcen.
Kathrin verwendet ein breites Spektrum erweiterter Spieltechniken, um ungewöhnliche Klänge und Farben auf der Harfe zu erzeugen, sie erforscht und erweitert die spezifischen Grenzen der Harfe, um ihre einzigartige instrumentale Ausdrucksform weiterzuentwickeln. Als Komponistin und Improvisatorin forscht sie an Konzepten und musikalischen Möglichkeiten an der Schnittstelle von komponierten Strukturen und Improvisation. Als Instrumentalistin hat sie sich in vielfältigen kollaborativen Kontexten zeitgenössischer kreativer Musik etabliert.
Die Veröffentlichung von "IMAGINARIUM", dem Debüt ihres Trios mit Robert Landfermann und Christian Weidner (PIROUET 2013), erregte mit einer einzigartigen improvisierten Kammermusik internationale Aufmerksamkeit, ebenso wie das folgende Album "TOWARD THE UNKNOWN" (PIROUET 2018). Das Trio tritt seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt regelmäßig national und international zusammen auf und die Konzerte sind von tiefer und nahezu symbiotischer Verbundenheit geprägt.
2021 wurde Kathrin in der Kategorie "Besondere Instrumente" sowie mit ihrem Trio in der Kategorie "Hörfunkproduktion des Jahres" für den Deutschen Jazzpreis nominiert. 2022 wurde das Album "MUSE" in der Kategorie "Instrumentales Album des Jahres" mit dem Deutschen Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet, ein Album mit Musik von Nils Wogram, aufgenommen von Nils, Hayden Chisholm, Gareth Lubbe und ihr. 2023 war sie erneut nominiert für den Deutschen Jazzpreis in der Kategorie "Besondere Instrumente". 2023 wurde sie mit dem SWR Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet.
Neben ihrer langjährigen Zusammenarbeit mit ihren Trio-Partnern Robert Landfermann und Christian Weidner hat Kathrin mit vielen renommierten Musikern aus der deutschen und europäischen Szene zusammengearbeitet und Aufnahmen gemacht. Dazu gehören Pablo Held (GLOW – Pirouet / Pablo Held meets - Hopalit Records), Niels Klein (LOOM - Jazzwerkstatt Berlin), Benjamin Schäfer (QUIET FIRE - nWog), Peter Ehwald (Septuor de grand matin - Jazzwerkstatt Berlin), Nils Wogram (MUSE - NWog Records), Robert Landfermann (RHENUS - Klaeng Records), Melt Trio (Consumers Live Session Series). Sie steuerte Harfenklänge zu Werken von Petter Eldh und Otis Sandsjö bei und spielte die Uraufführung eines ihr gewidmeten Werkes von Christopher Dell. Sie hat ausserdem mit Jonas Burgwinkel, Frank Gratkowski, Elisabeth Coudoux, Kit Downes, Almut Kühne, Philipp Gropper, Jozef Dumoulin, Christopher Dell, Elias Stemeseder, Christian Lillinger und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet.
Sie tritt auch mit einem Solo-Programm auf, unter anderem beim Bezau Festival 2022 und Klaeng Festival 2020, das vom WDR übertragen wurde.
Gelegentlich wird sie als Gastkünstlerin bei interdisziplinären Projekten engagiert wie dem Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble (u.a. Pitch Festival Amsterdam, Mutek Festival Mexico City, Atonal Festival Berlin, Beethoven Fest Bonn), dem Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra (Jubiläumstournee 2016 u.a. Roskilde Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg Vorpommern), der Novoflot Opernkompagnie (Kunstfest Weimar, Copenhagen Opera Festival, Greek National Opera, Volksbühne Berlin). 2013 spielte sie mit Max Herre (MTV Unplugged) und 2014 mit Emiliana Torrini (XJazz Festival).
2017 und 2019 war sie eingeladen für ihr Trio und das EOS Kammerorchester Köln zu komponieren und die Werke mehrfach aufzuführen.
2013-2019 war sie zusammen mit Christian Weidner Kuratorin der SERIOUS SERIES, einer unabhängigen Konzertreihe für zeitgenössischen Jazz und improvisierte Musik in Berlin.
Neben ihrer musikalischen Karriere engagiert sie sich kulturpolitisch und bringt ihre Expertise ein, um die Arbeitsbedingungen und Fördersysteme für Musiker*innen und Veranstaltungsorte zu verbessern und spricht auf Panels zu kulturpolitischen Themen. Von 2016 bis 2019 war sie Mitglied des Vorstands der IG Jazz Berlin, eines Verbandes, der die Interessen der Berliner Jazzszene vertritt, von 2020 bis 2022 dann als Geschäftsführerin des Verbandes. In dieser Funktion und darüber hinaus setzt sie sich seit 2016 für eine Institution für Jazz und improvisierte Musik in Berlin ein.
Sie ist und war in Gremien und Jurys z.B. des Jazzpreises Berlin, des Musikfonds des Bundes und der Àrvore Foundation aktiv. 2023 war sie eingeladen, als externe Expertin Mitglied der Jury der Hochschule der Künste in Bern zu sein.
Von Juli 2016 bis Juni 2020 war sie Stipendiatin der Schweizer Stiftung Árvore. 2021 - 2024 gehörte sie der Kommission der Stiftung an.
Kathrin Pechlof lebt in Berlin, sie ist mit dem Saxophonisten Christian Weidner verheiratet und ist Mutter einer Tochter.

Kathrin Pechlof is a harpist and composer working at the intersection of contemporary improvised and composed music, contemporary jazz and other forms of creative music.
She has studied classical harp w. Gudrun Haag in Munich and composition and improvisation w. Joachim Ullrich and Frank Gratkowski in Cologne.
Kathrin is using a wide spectrum of extended techniques to produce most unusual sounds and colors on the harp and she is constantly researching and expanding the specific boundaries of her instrument to further developing her very own musical language. As a composer and improviser she is exploring concepts for improvised music creating new musical possibilities at the intersection of composed and improvised music. Over the years she has set up her instrument in a unique way in the context of various surroundings of contemporary creative music.
The release of IMAGINARIUM, the debut of her trio with Robert Landfermann and Christian Weidner (PIROUET 2013) attracted international attention as well as the following album TOWARD THE UNKNOWN (PIROUET 2018).The Trio is performing regulary together nationally and internationally over more than a decade.
In 2021 she was one of three nominees for the German Jazz Award in the category of “Special Instruments” as well as with her Trio in the category of “Broadcast Production of the Year”. 2022 “MUSE” was awarded in the category “Album Instumental of the Year” at the German Jazz Awards, an album featuring music by Nils Wogram recorded by Nils, Hayden Chisholm, Gareth Lubbe and her. 2023 she was again a nominee for the German Jazz Award in the category of “special instruments”. 2023 she was awarded with the SWR Jazzpreis.
Apart from the longlasting work with her trio partners Robert Landfermann and Christian Weidner, Kathrin has collaborated and recorded with many renowned musicians from Germany´s and European scene include Pablo Held (GLOW 1 – Pirouet, Pablo Held meets - Hopalit Records), Niels Klein (LOOM – Jazzwerkstatt Berlin), Benjamin Schäfer (QUIET FIRE – nWog), Peter Ehwald (Septuor de grand matin - Jazzwerkstatt Berlin), Nils Wogram MUSE - NWog Records) Robert Landfermann (RHENUS - Klaeng Records), Melt Trio (Consumers Live Session Series). She contributed harp sounds to works of Petter Eldh and Otis Sandsjö and premiered a piece by Christopher Dell dedicated to her. She has performed with Jonas Burgwinkel, Frank Gratkowski, Elisabeth Coudoux, Kit Downes, Almut Kühne, Philipp Gropper, Jozef Dumoulin, Christopher Dell, Elias Stemeseder, Christian Lillinger and many others.
She is also performing with a solo-programm, a.o. at Bezau Festival 2022 and Klaeng Festival 2020, which was broadcasted by WDR. Occasionally is asked to contribute as a guest-artist in interdisciplinary projects like the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble (a.o. Pitch Festival Amsterdam, Mutek Festival Mexico City, Atonal Festival Berlin, Beethoven Fest Bonn), Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra (2016, 10 years anniversary tour a.o. Roskilde Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg Vorpommern), Novoflot Opernkompagnie (Kunstfest Weimar, Copenhagen Opera Festival, Greek National Opera, Volksbühne Berlin), 2013 she has played + recorded with Max Herre (MTV Unplugged) and 2014 with Emiliana Torrini (XJazz Festival).
2017 and 2019 she performed with EOS Kammerorchester Köln her own compositions, written for her trio and chamber orchestra.
From July 2016 - June 2020 she was fortunate to be a fellow of the Àrvore Foundation. 2021-2024 she was a member of the foundations jury commission.
Together with Christian Weidner she was co-curator of the SERIOUS SERIES, an independent concert series for contemporary jazz and improvised music in Berlin from 2013 to 2019.
Beside her musical career she is passionate about contributing her expertise in attempt to improve working conditions and funding systems for musicians and venues. 2016 -2019 she was a member of the board of IG Jazz Berlin, a syndicate representing the interest of the berlin based musicians and promoters, from 2020 to 2022 on as the syndicates executive secretary. Within this capacity and beyond she advocates for an instition for jazz and improvised music in Berlin since 2016.
She contributes to committees and juries such as Jazzpreis Berlin, Musikfonds and the Àrvore Foundation. In 2023 she was invited to be a member of the jury of the University of the Arts in Bern as an external expert.
Kathrin Pechlof lives in Berlin, she is married to saxophone player Christian Weidner and mother of a daughter.
